WTCHH – Episode 7

Turning Weaknesses into Strengths

In our latest episode of “When The Call Hits Home,” we had the pleasure of speaking with Erich, a seasoned paramedic and former firefighter with a family deeply rooted in the world of first responders and military personnel. This episode dives deep into Erich’s professional journey, his brush with mental health struggles, and the unique childhood experiences that shaped him.

Erich’s story is one of relentless pursuit and unwavering commitment. From a young age, Erich was immersed in an environment that emphasized resilience and independence, courtesy of his parents who were both in law enforcement. His mother served as a Maryland state trooper, and his father worked with the FBI. Moving 21 times in 19 years, Erich’s childhood was far from ordinary. He recounted tales of assisting his father on surveillance missions, adding an unexpected layer to his formative years.

Despite the transient lifestyle and the challenges it posed in forming and maintaining friendships, Erich found solace and purpose in the world of firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS). He took a different path when he joined the volunteer firehouse, a decision that marked his teenage rebellion. While his peers indulged in typical rebellious activities, Erich embraced the rigorous demands of the fire department, eventually becoming a firefighter and later transitioning into EMS due to his recognition of a gap in medical knowledge.

Professional development wasn’t the only focus of this episode. Erich shared raw and heartfelt accounts of his battles with mental health, a topic often stigmatized in the first responder community. He spoke candidly about feeling guilt and mental strain after a tragic incident where he felt responsible for a patient’s death. At one point, his experiences led him to step away from EMS for a period, pivoting to roles in hyperbarics and occupational health. Humbled by these challenges, Erich found a new agency that prioritized mental well-being, providing a supportive culture that proved instrumental in his healing journey.

One of the most compelling segments of the episode revolved around Erich’s advocacy for mental health. He openly discussed the necessity of seeking help and the importance of dismantling the stigma that often prevents first responders from reaching out. Despite the ingrained belief in handling everything independently—a mindset his parents instilled—Erich highlighted how vital organizational support and access to therapy were in his journey.

Erich’s efforts to instigate change extend beyond mental health. He shared his involvement in proposing and implementing statewide protocol changes. His research-driven initiatives led to the adoption of a new medication in state protocols and underscored his passion for evidence-based improvements. Erich’s dedication to his profession is evident, and his ability to turn perceived flaws like imposter syndrome and perfectionism into strengths is particularly inspiring.

The episode wasn’t without lighter moments. A humorous anecdote about his childhood experience at the US embassy in Berlin provided a brief respite from the heavy topics, showcasing Erich’s ability to balance seriousness with humor.

Erich’s narrative is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the importance of seeking help. His journey from a child involved in intelligence tactics to a prominent figure making impactful changes in EMS protocols is a story of resilience, advocacy, and unwavering dedication. As we continue to explore the lives and challenges of first responders, this episode stands out as a powerful reminder of the human elements behind the roles and the critical need for mental health support in these demanding professions.
